Artists on the Bowery: Neighborhood Tour

Discover the artistic soul of the Lower East Side with a new walking tour with stops along the Bowery outside former artist homes and studios. In this tour led by Public Programs Coordinator Austin D Bowes, we will delve into the lives of artists on the Bowery from the 1960s on. Artists we will discuss include Lynda Benglis, John Giorno, Bob Thompson, Eva Hesse, Sol Lewitt, and Adrian Piper.
This tour meets, rain or shine, at the New Museum and moves southward ending around 117 Hester Street.

This program is presented as part of Lower East Side History Month. Lower East Side History Month was conceived by Downtown Art and FABnyc in 2014, and launched in partnership with community organizations from all parts of the Lower East Side. About the Speaker
Austin D Bowes (they/them) is an arts worker, writer, and baker. They work at the New Museum as the Public Programs Coordinator, where they organize artist talks, performances, screenings, and programs of other dynamic formats as part of the Education and Public Engagement team. Recent co-organizing highlights include the New Museum’s 2023-2024 artist-in-residence program “Camilo Godoy: renacemos a cada instante,” as well as the Out of Bounds programming series of gallery-based talks, workshops, and tours that seek to expand the ways we think about what’s on display in the New Museum. As a baker, Bowes produces cakes, breads, and pastries as Austin Doughs.
