Points of View: Authorship and the Iconic Image

Join us for a tour focusing on Raymond Pettibon’s appropriation of iconic historical images. Pettibon reimagines indelible photographs like Nick Ut’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Napalm Girl and Joe Rosenthal’s Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima by shifting mediums from photography to drawing, subtly tweaking visual details, and incorporating hand-rendered text. Focusing on No Title (For once Cheney…) (2007), No Title (“If she didn’t…”) (2009), and No Title (I have made…) (2007), we will consider the role of the symbolic image in the creation of historical narratives, and discuss how Pettibon’s own visual and textual interventions require us to interrogate authorship: Whose image is it, and why? How does citation function within each work? Who is the assumed speaker of the text, and to whom is it addressed?
New Perspectives tours are led by the New Museum Teaching Fellow, an emerging scholar in art history or a related field. The topics of the tours are based on the Fellow’s ongoing research and change monthly, engaging participants in uniquely focused examinations of selected objects and installations. New Perspectives tours are free with Museum admission. Due to limited capacity, please preregister and meet in the Lobby at the time of the tour.
The current New Museum Teaching Fellow is Maggie Mustard, a PhD candidate in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University, where she is completing her dissertation on postwar Japanese photography.
