Join us for a tour focused on the creation of intimate spaces in “Lynette Yiadom-Boakye: Under-Song For A Cipher” and “Kaari Upson: Good thing you are not alone.” In the case of Yiadom-Boakye’s portraiture, we will explore how the artist captures a sense of familiarity and intimacy, despite the paintings’ subjects being entirely fictive. Through a discussion of Upson’s installation and video projects, including My Mother Drinks Pepsi (2014–ongoing) and In Search of the Perfect Double (2017), we will examine how the intimate psychologies of the artist’s friends and family are excavated, constructed, and represented. Finally, we will look for the intertwining threads of fact and fiction in the act of imagining or creating intimate knowledge in both of these exhibitions.

New Perspectives tours are led by the New Museum Teaching Fellow, an emerging scholar in art history or a related field. The topics of the tours are based on the Fellow’s ongoing research and change monthly, engaging participants in uniquely focused examinations of selected objects and installations. To read descriptions of current and upcoming New Perspectives tours, please view the calendar. New Perspectives tours are free with Museum admission. Due to limited capacity, please preregister here and meet in the Lobby at the time of the tour.

The current New Museum Teaching Fellow is Maggie Mustard, a PhD candidate in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University, where she is completing her dissertation on postwar Japanese photography.
