This New Perspectives tour will explore Lubaina Himid’s paintings in her exhibition “Work from Underneath” and Melanie Crean, Shaun Leonardo, and Sable Elyse Smith’s collaborative video installation, “Mirror/Echo/Tilt,” through a black feminist lens. At its core, black feminist thought reimagines the world in ways that make it more suitable for all. Together, we will discuss how the works propose radical reconstructions that promote equity rather than sameness. First, we will examine how Himid’s paintings express a new blueprint for gender and labor. Then, with Mirror/Echo/Tilt, we will imagine possibilities for world-building within and in spite of current systems of punishment and control. We will be challenged to consider what we are willing to sacrifice in the fight for a more just society.

New Perspectives tours are led by a New Museum Teaching Fellow, an emerging scholar in art history or a related field. The topics of the tours are based on the Fellow’s ongoing research and change monthly, engaging participants in uniquely focused examinations of selected objects and installations. To read descriptions of current and upcoming New Perspectives tours, please view the calendar. New Perspectives tours are free with Museum admission.

The current New Museum Teaching Fellow is Troizel Carr, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University, where his research questions the (im)possibility of black childhood through fairy tales and black children’s figurations in post-emancipation art and literature.
