First Saturday for Families: How to See a Song

Cover Image:

Anri Sala, Moth in B-flat, 2015. Altered snare drum, drumsticks, altered snare stand, loudspeaker parts, and mono sound, 29 1/2 × 22 × 16 1/8 in (75 × 56 × 41 cm); 7:18 min. Courtesy Marian Goodman Gallery

Join us for a family workshop offered in conjunction with the exhibition “Anri Sala: Answer Me,” on view from February 3 to April 10, 2016. Highlighting Sala’s continuing interest in how sound and music can engage architecture and history, the exhibition will feature extensive multichannel audio and video installations that will unfold across the Second, Third, and Fourth Floor galleries, composing a symphonic experience specific to the New Museum.

To represent their own perception of sound, families will have the opportunity to interpret different musical compositions through color, shape, and gestural line. The resulting images, drawn onto vellum, will be transformed into sculptural lanterns that will be lit in time to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year on February 8.

New Museum First Saturdays for Families are free of charge. This program is designed and recommended for families with children aged between four and twelve years, and includes free New Museum admission for up to two adults per family. Children under eighteen are always admitted free. No preregistration is required. Space is limited, and tickets are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Your entire party must be present; tickets will not be given to partial parties.
