New Perspectives Tour: Language Games

Anri Sala’s early work questions the role that spoken language and syntax played in creating and supporting some of the most dangerous ideologies of the twentieth century and was influenced by his childhood experiences in Albania during the last decades of a totalitarian regime. Over the past twenty years, the artist has considered other systems such as music, sound, architecture, and space that unconsciously provide meaning to our lives, both for better and for worse.

This month’s New Perspectives tour will focus on three works, The Present Moment (in B-flat) (2014), The Present Moment (in D) (2014), and Làk-kat 2.0 (British/American) (2015), and will examine how Sala casts suspicion on pedestrian systems of meaning. We will consider what it means when Sala deconstructs, ruptures, or reconstitutes these systems, and discuss how it affects the viewer’s individual experience of the work.

New Perspectives tours are led by the New Museum Teaching Fellow, an emerging scholar in art history or a related field. The topics of the tours are based on the Fellow’s ongoing research and change monthly, engaging participants in uniquely focused examinations of selected objects and installations. To read descriptions of current and upcoming New Perspectives tours, please view the calendar. New Perspectives tours are free with Museum admission. Due to limited capacity, please preregister here.

New Museum Teaching Fellow Maggie Mustard is a PhD candidate in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University, where she is completing her dissertation on postwar Japanese photography.
