Organized in conjunction with “Jim Shaw: The End is Here.”

Outside the Box offers a roster of gallery-based talks given by a variety of guest speakers over the course of a season. In this series, lecturers with diverse backgrounds and affinities will address the New Museum’s current exhibition “Jim Shaw: The End is Here” in forty-five- to sixty-minute presentations taking place exclusively in the Museum’s galleries. As a way to emphasize the Museum’s strong commitment to new art and new ideas, Outside the Box talks are open to the public and are intended to provide participants with multidisciplinary perspectives on New Museum exhibitions. To this end, lecturers will speak about the exhibition or themes emergent in Shaw’s works from the various positions they occupy—be they academic, personal, political, etc.—and will engage in rich investigations that will illuminate and probe the Museum’s current exhibition program.

For the fall season, Outside the Box talks include:

Thursday October 29, 2015, 3:30 PM: Naomi Fisher

Thursday November 12, 2015, 3:30 PM: Dan Nadel

Thursday December 3, 2015, 3:30 PM: John Miller

Thursday January 7, 2016, 3:30 PM: Bartholomew Ryan

All Outside the Box talks are free with Museum admission, but attendance is limited. Please RSVP here for more information and to request tickets.

The daughter of a botanist, Naomi Fisher was born and raised in Miami, where the wild and untamed tropical environment famously serves as the backdrop to the population’s tendency toward artifice and materialistic excess. Fisher frequently explores this culture clash in her work through the lens of feminist theory and strategies derived from Surrealist art. Fisher’s paintings, photographs, and videos have been exhibited internationally in such venues as Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Halle fuer Kunst, Luneburg, Germany; Kemper Museum, Kansas City; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel; Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, Miami; and the Deste Foundation for Contemporary Art, Athens. Her work is included in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Fine Art Boston; and more. Since 2004, she has run BFI (Bas Fisher Invitational), an artist-run space in Miami and a W.A.G.E.-certified 501c3. Most recently, she has been creating large-scale public art projects and staging readings from her dream journals.

John Miller is an artist, a writer, and a musician based in New York and Berlin. In 2011, Miller received the Wolfgang Hahn Prize from the Society for Contemporary Art at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. In February of 2015, he published Mike Kelley: Educational Complex as part of Afterall Books’ One Work series. In February 2016, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, will feature an exhibition that surveys his artwork from the early 1980s to the present. Miller is also Professor of Professional Practice in Barnard College’s Art History Department.

Dan Nadel has authored books including The Collected Hairy Who Publications, 1966–1969; Art Out of Time: Unknown Comic Visionaries, 1900–1969; and Gary Panter. He is the co-author of Electrical Banana: Masters of Psychedelic Art and Dorothy and Otis: Designing the American Dream, the co-editor of The Comics Journal, and has published essays and criticism in the Washington Post, Frieze, and Bookforum. As a curator, Nadel has mounted exhibitions including: “What Nerve! Alternative Figures in American Art: 1960 to the Present” in Providence and New York; “Victor Moscoso: Psychedelic Drawings, 1967–1982” in New York; “Return of the Repressed: Destroy All Monsters 1973–1977″ in Los Angeles; and “Karl Wirsum: Drawings 1967–1970″ in New York.

Bartholomew Ryan is an independent curator based in Pittsburgh. Previously he was Assistant Curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where he co-curated the ambitious new historical exhibition “International Pop” (2015). Ryan also recently co-curated the performance exhibition “Scaffold Room” by choreographer and artist Ralph Lemon. In 2013, he curated “9 Artists,” a multigenerational group exhibition and accompanying catalogue that considered the changing role of the artist in contemporary culture, which opened at the Walker before traveling to the MIT List Visual Arts Center. Prior to that, Ryan co-curated “Painter Painter” (2013); Pedro Reyes’s “Baby Marx” (2011); “Goshka Macuga: It Broke from Within” (2010); and Eiko & Koma’s “Naked” (2010).
