Get Weird: DJ Rupture and 77Klash
Get Weird is standing tall in June, bringing a Brooklyn-style sound clash of dancehall, breakbeat, and hip-hop to the New Museum.
DJ Rupture
BK-based DJ Rupture is the mind behind Soot Records, home to both African hip-hop/ragga/taarab hybrids and straight ahead cumbia. He is also a co-partner with beat ripper Matt Shadetek in the “multimedia tropical storm” that is Dutty Artz, and duets with guitarist Andy Moor (of seminal anarchist punk band The Ex). Impossibly, Rupture manages to bring all these elements to fusion in his deeply party-starting/thought-provoking sets.

Dancehall artist and producer 77Klash has produced rhythms for some of Jamaica’s finest, including Vybz Kartel and Turbulence. For his very special show this month, expect an extra-explosive combination of these elements: dancehall, punk, grime, and hardcore Brooklyn hip-hop.

Get Weird is a monthly series of performances featuring experimental and freaky jams. Expect anything from dusted-off salsa to psychedelic harmonies, performed by unknown legends and young-gun mavericks. Get Weird takes place on the third Thursday of each month.
