In conjunction with the exhibition “Emory Douglas: Black Panther” at the New Museum, Jessica Green and Philip Maysles of Maysles Cinema have selected a series of films illuminating the history and legacy of the Black Panther Party with the guidance of Panther archivist Billy X. The series features three screenings at the New Museum on July 25, September 12, and October 17 with three additional screenings at Maysles Cinema in Harlem (dates TBD). Screening topics include: “Building a Panther Iconography” (July 25, New Museum); “Women with Guns;” “Panthers and Hippies;” “Panther Legacy” (September 12 and October 17, New Museum).

Maysles Cinema is a nonprofit theater dedicated to the presentation of documentary film and video. The cinema fosters a democratic viewing experience by selecting and presenting movies in collaboration with independent filmmakers, programmers, critics, local film clubs, and organizations. Maysles Cinema is located at 343 Malcolm X Blvd/Lenox Avenue, between 127th and 128th Streets.

Director Agnes Varda, (1969) 46 min
Agnes Varda was one of a number of New Wave filmmakers attracted to the revolutionary message and activity of the Black Panthers in the late ’60s and early ’70s. This film captures the broad movement to free Panther leader Huey Newton with speeches by Eldridge Cleaver, Bobby Seale, Kwame Toure, and Bob Avakian among others. Varda also pays close attention to the highly orchestrated political theater carried out by the Party in the face of state terrorism.

Merritt College: Home of the Black Panthers
Peralta TV (2009) 60 min
Both black studies and the Black Panther Party started at Merritt College. While focusing on West Oakland in the late ’60s, the film addresses the roots of the movement and the impact the party had on social justice internationally. Featuring interviews with Richard Aoki, Emory Douglas, Bobby Seale, Billy X, and many more Bay Area and international Panthers.

Emory Douglas Lecture, 2005 @ Kink’s
In this film, Emory Douglas discusses the origins of the Black Panther newspaper and his work as Minister of Culture for the party.
