Christoph Draeger

Born 1965, Zurich/Lives and works in New York

Christoph Draeger employs installation, drawing, sculpture, video, and photo-based media to explore issues related to disaster and media-saturated culture. He participated in the International Studio Program at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York and studied at École Nationale Supérieur des Arts Visuels de la Cambre, Brussels, as well as at the School of Visual Arts, Luzerne. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at The Kitchen, New York; Paço das Artes, São Paulo; and Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Draeger has been included in group exhibitions at P.S.1, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and KunstWerke, Berlin among others. He has participated in international festivals and biennials in Guangzhou, Havana, Valencia, Turin, and Liverpool.

Born 1974, Incheon/Lives and works in Seoul

jung’s photographs, videos, and installations recall people who exist among us, yet are invisible. The “invisible” are unregistered, undocumented, and unidentified individuals marginalized from the common vernacular language, and instead, have their own nonverbal counter-languages. jung’s consistent endeavor is to identify and enrich the vocabularies of these counter-languages in art by questioning the ethics of representation and the politics of such collective sentiments as loss, agony, remorse, and sadness.

Sangdon Kim

Born 1973 in Seoul/Lives and works in Seoul

Sangdon Kim’s work addresses socio-political and ecological issues through research-based, collaborative community projects in such contested sites as Seoul, Pyeong-taek, Yeojoo, Busan, and most recently Dongducheon. His projects address the effect of government policies and economic globalization on minoritized citizens and the creative potential of a society. Operating at the intersection of art and cultural activism, Kim creates a meeting ground where local communities, activists, and artists can engage in productive dialogue and provocative understanding of the area of focus.

Rho Jae Oon

Born 1971, in Daegu/Lives and works in Seoul

Rho Jae Oon produces meta-narrative with drifting images and sound archived from the Web. His work starts with meticulous research and the archiving of image clips and sound files, which he appropriates and recomposes into his own narrative. His narratives never directly describe a specific context, but allude to a context’s socio-political issues. His final Web “publications” take the form of loose random sequences divided in chapters, often recalling sci-fi novels, and can be compared to contemporary literature, music, and painting.

Ayman Ramadan

Ayman Ramadan began to produce his work after participating in workshops and building relationships with visiting and resident artists at the Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art in Cairo, where he had been employed since 2000. Informed by his immediate surroundings, Ramadan’s work spans an extraordinary breadth of media and influences, from Minimalist sculpture to photography, video, and performance, often involving residents of downtown Cairo. In 2001, he had his first solo exhibition at the Townhouse Gallery. In the last six years, he has had five solo exhibitions at the Townhouse Gallery and has exhibited his work in Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. Ramadan’s video work Iftar was screened at the Tate Modern in London, and his installation Baladi Bus was part of a group exhibition at Kunstmuseum, Bonn. He is currently studying art and living in San Francisco.

Martha Rosler

Born 1943, Brooklyn, New York/Lives and works in Brooklyn, New York

Martha Rosler was born in Brooklyn, New York, where she now lives, after spending the 1970s in California. She works in video, photo-text, installation, sculpture, and performance, and writes on aspects of culture. She is a renowned teacher and has lectured widely, nationally and internationally. Rosler's work is centered on everyday life and the public sphere, often with an eye to women's experience. Recurrent concerns are the media and war as well as architecture and the built environment, from housing and homelessness to systems of transport. Her work has been seen in the Venice Biennale of 2003; the Liverpool Biennial and the Taipei Biennial (both 2004); documenta 12 and SkultpturProjekte Münster (2007); as well as many major international survey shows, including several Whitney biennials. She has had numerous solo exhibitions. A retrospective of her work, Positions in the Life World (1998-2000), was shown in five European cities and at the New Museum and the International Center of Photography (both in New York), concurrently. Rosler has published fifteen books of photography, art, and writing, most recently Imágines públicas: La funcíon política de la imagen (Gustavo Gili, Barcelona, 2007). Decoys and Disruptions: Selected Essays 1975-2001 was published by MIT Press in 2004. Books of her photographs include Passionate Signals (Cantz, 2005), In the Place of the Public: Airport Series (Cantz, 1997), and Rites of Passage (NYFA, 1995). If You Lived Here (Free Press, 1991) addresses her Dia project on housing, homelessness, and urban life. Rosler has been awarded the Spectrum International Prize in Photography for 2005, the Oskar-Kokoschka Prize in 2006, and Anonymous Was a Woman award in 2007. She teaches at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and Rutgers University.

Jan Rothuizen

Born 1968, Amsterdam/Lives and works in Amsterdam and Beirut

Jan Rothuizen’s work employs photography, drawings, texts and on-site infiltrations exploring where the boundaries of the personal and communal shift. Rothuizen’s work has been exhibited at the Singapore Art Museum, Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art, Cairo, Vitamin Creative Space, Guangzhou, Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessalonica, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam.

Anton Vidokle

Born 1965, Moscow/Lives and works New York and Berlin

Anton Vidokle arrived in the U.S. with his parents in 1981, settling on Broome Street on the Lower East Side. His work has been exhibited in shows such as the Venice, Lyon, Dakar, and Lodz Biennials and at the Tate Modern, London; Moderna Galerija, Ljubljana; Musée d’art Modern de la Ville de Paris; Museo Carrillo Gil, Mexico City; UCLA Hammer, Los Angeles; ICA, Boston; Haus Der Kunst, Munich; P.S.1, New York; among others. With Julieta Aranda, he organized e-flux video rental, which traveled to numerous institutions including Portikus, Frankfurt; KunstWerk, Berlin; Extra City, Antwerp; Carpenter Center, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; and others. As founding director of e-flux, he has produced projects such as The Next Documenta Should Be Curated By An Artist, Do it, Utopia Station poster project, and organized An Image Bank for Everyday Revolutionary Life and Martha Rosler Library. Vidokle initiated research into education as site for artistic practice as co-curator for Manifesta 6, which was canceled. In response to the cancellation, Vidokle set up an independent project in Berlin called Unitednationsplaza—a twelve-month project involving more than a hundred artists, writers, philosophers, and diverse audiences. Located behind a supermarket in East Berlin, UNP’s program featured numerous seminars, lectures, screenings, book presentations, and projects including the Martha Rosler Library.

Koh Seung Wook

Born 1968, Jeju Island/Lives and works in Seoul

Koh Seung Wook uses photographs, installation, and video for his conceptual projects criticizing art systems and conventional art practices. In his solo show “Please Honor Me with Your Attendance,” Koh presented a text piece appropriating the gallery’s rental contract. Since then, he has presented performance-based photo and video works such as Playing in a Vacant Lot and Triathlon, criticizing progress-driven urbanization and industrialization. Koh currently works as a director of alternative space pool, for which he is organizing a seminar series on autonomous civilian movements based on regional understanding and solidarity in East Asia.
