+ POOL is an initiative to not only provide a clean, safe way for the public to swim in the rivers of New York, but to also test a new model for how public, innovative, and ecologically-driven architecture could be conceived, developed, financed, and built on a civic scale.
Designed as four pools in one, + POOL provides a way for all types of swimmers—from lap swimmers to kids to loungers—to use and enjoy rivers in an unprecedented way. The project parallels the ongoing efforts of New York City and other cities around the world to reconnect with the waterways that surround and define them. In New York in particular, great strides have been taken to bring the public to the water’s edge through parks, trails, and activities, and yet the water itself remains too contaminated to allow for public swimming.
+ POOL aims to reconnect the public with the city’s rivers and harbors, simultaneously providing education, exhibition, and discussion while changing the perception of the city’s waterways as we move towards more ecological ways of building and living.
