Materials for the Arts (MFTA) expands the resources available for creative activities in New York City by promoting reuse. We collect unneeded items from companies and individuals and distribute these donations for free to qualified nonprofit organizations and public schools.

“Tap the Trash” is our participatory art project. During StreetFest, MFTA will set out a variety of materials that represent the detritus of our city’s thriving creative industries—fabric, props, packaging, posters, and more. With the assistance of teaching artists, the public will be invited to create mixed-media sculptures that reimagine waste as dynamic works.

Small groups of MFTA and volunteer artists will assist the public in creating these sculptures, which are intended to offer passersby a participatory art experience. After the festival, the sculptures will be disassembled and the materials reclaimed for another creative activity. Materials for the Arts is a unit of New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
