Dirty Looks NYC and New Museum Present Dynasty Handbag: Transparent Trap

Transparent Trap is the latest Dynasty Handbag performance in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. Professor Handbag reveals the details of selling her video short Eternal Quadrangle (which premiered at the New Museum in 2011) to MOCAtv, along with an exposé of the compromises she made in doing so. The performance is also an exploration of the idea of artistic sellout and transparency at large, as well as the complications of trying to make money in order to continue creating noncommercial art in the US. DH will also present two new video pieces, Remote Penetration (dir. Josef Kraska), starring DH as a superhero-drone that sings into a squash, and A Dream Is Not A Life (dir. Hedia Maron), inspired by Beyoncé‘s biopic Life Is But A Dream. There will also be some “singing” and “dancing,” D-bag style.

Jibz Cameron is a performance/video artist and actor who lives and works in New York City. Her work as alter ego Dynasty Handbag has been seen in institutions such as the New Museum, The Kitchen, DTW, MoMA P.S.1, Joe’s Pub, PS122, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Outfest, SXSW Film Festival, and Performa ’07, ’09, and ’11, as well as many international dives both great and small. She has been heralded by the New York Times as “the funniest and most pitch perfect performance seen in years” and “crackpot genius” by the Village Voice. In addition to her work as Dynasty Handbag, she has also been seen acting in work by The Wooster Group, The Residents, Theater of a Two-Headed Calf, Kalup Linzy, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Jennifer Miller, among others. She is a regular on the newly launched web-series “Song of The Wild” by Tim Harrington and produced by David Cross. She has taught Performance and Theater Studies and Comedy Theory at TISCH NYU. She is currently working on an evening-length Dynasty Handbag piece, Soggy Glasses, based on Homer’s Odyssey, to premiere in Fall 2014.
Hedia Maron has screened a number of short films in festivals such as the Berlin Film Festival, Documenta, SXSW, Outfest, and London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, as well as in venues including the New Museum, Tribeca Film Center, Anthology Film Archives, Gene Siskel Film Center, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Queens Museum. Her editorial work has been seen on national television (promos, commercials, documentary shorts), in festivals such as the Moving Image Festival, and in venues including The Kitchen, Mount Tremper Arts, and MoMA P.S.1. Maron received a BFA in Film/Video from California Institute of the Arts and an MFA in Film from Columbia University. She is currently in production on her first feature, a documentary about her strange and beautiful family, Before Us (beforeusfilm.com).
Josef Kraska is from Cleveland, Ohio, and lives and work in Brooklyn, New York. He has a BFA in Film, Video, and Photography from the Cleveland Institute of Art. He has created video works for the IFC network (“Food Party”) and MTVother’s “Late Night Munchies,” as well as Narcissister and Dynasty Handbag. He also has a musical project called Babe E. where he makes music for animations through the collective Aboveground Animation. Hayden Dunham studied applied psychology, visual aesthetics, and gender studies at New York University’s Gallatin School. She has participated in exhibitions and performances at MoMA P.S.1, the New Museum, Colette (Paris), Soloway Gallery (Brooklyn), Hat Gallery (Valencia, Spain), among others. In 2011, she cofounded Other Travel, an interactive publication and metaphysical experiment. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
