This free workshop for educators will be held on Zoom. Please see below for a list of accessible materials.
In this online workshop for educators, artist Erin Jane Nelson will introduce her work in the 2021 Triennial, “Soft Water Hard Stone,” and guide participants in art making related to questions explored in her practice.
How might art attune us to entangled relationships amongst ourselves, materials, systems, land, and community? Nelson’s ceramic wall sculptures simultaneously attend to depth and surface, inside and outside, abstract and representational forms, and human and non-human bodies. Science and science fiction blur in a scope that zooms from spores and microscopic cells to cosmic landscapes, forest floors, and bodies of water. In this program, educators will experiment with ways that art making can shift our perspective and relationship to environment and motivate adaptive responses to climate change’s effects.
Before the session, please gather the following materials:
• Five found materials. Examples: dried leaves, recycled human-made items like photographs or discarded papers, pigment or paint-like materials like berries, old nail polish, or coffee grounds.
• Paper or cardboard of a size that is comfortable for your workspace to use as a ground for layering and collaging.
• Adhesives – glue or glue sticks, tape
• Scissors
About the Artist
Erin Jane Nelson (b. 1989, Neenah, WI, USA) is an artist who lives and works in Atlanta. Recent solo exhibitions of her work include “One Entanglement, Under Clouds,” Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, Atlanta (2021); “Resting Spore,” DOCUMENT, Chicago (2020), “שכינה Shekinah,” Chapter NY, New York (2020); and “Her Deepness,” Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (2019). Her work has been shown in group shows at Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, CO (2020); Fries Museum, Leeuwarden, the Netherlands (2020); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2019, 2018); and La Galerie, centre d’art contemporain, Noisy-le-Sec, France (2019). Nelson was the recipient of the Rabkin Award for Arts Journalism (2020) and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia’s Working Artist Project Fellowship. She has been the Artistic Director of Burnaway since 2018.
