First Saturdays for Families: Raise a Flag

Drawing inspiration from the way Hans Haacke uses familiar symbols to critique institutions, families will consider how Haacke alters the American flag in his artwork “State of the Union” (2005) to express his opposition to US policies during the Iraq War. Flags contain symbolically loaded colors and imagery, often meant to communicate a shared national identity, history, and values. When people do not feel and experience this unity, how are such symbols used and altered? Alternatively, how are new representations created to find and express belonging? Join us as we explore how to convey our own values, histories, and experiences and share them with others through symbols on flags. Using mixed media families will construct personalized flags to represent themselves.
New Museum First Saturdays for Families are free of charge. This program is designed and recommended for families with children aged between four and twelve years and includes free New Museum admission for two adults per family. Children under eighteen are always admitted free. No preregistration required. Space is limited, and tickets are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Your entire party must be present; tickets will not be given to partial parties.
