First Saturdays for Families: Familiar Portraits

Cover Image:

Jordan Casteel, Noelle, 2019. Oil on canvas, 78 × 60 in (198.1 × 152.4 cm). Rennie Collection, Vancouver. Courtesy the artist and Casey Kaplan, New York

Jordan Casteel often depicts her friends and community members in informal and domestic settings. Taking inspiration from the portraits in the exhibition “Jordan Casteel: Within Reach,” participants will be encouraged to draw their family members and friends. Families will consider how the settings, vibrant colors, and objects incorporated in Casteel’s portraits express different moods and meanings, and ask one another, “What details do you want in your portrait?”

New Museum First Saturdays for Families are free of charge. This program is designed and recommended for families with children aged between four and twelve years and includes free New Museum admission for two adults per family. Children under eighteen are always admitted free. No preregistration is required. Space is limited, and tickets are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Your entire party must be present and accompanied by at least one child; tickets will not be given to partial parties.

The New Museum is wheelchair accessible; learn more about access services and amenities here. To request accommodations, please email access@newmuseum.org or call 212.219.1222 ×235 at least three weeks in advance.
