From Black Boxes to Open Systems: Rhizome ArtBase Relaunch

“From Black Boxes to Open Systems” is a knowledge-sharing initiative presented by the New Museum’s digital art affiliate Rhizome. The project aims to support artists and art organizations to develop a better understanding of the concepts, skills, and infrastructure necessary for the exhibition, collection, and stewardship of born-digital art of all kinds.
Rhizome’s key archive of born-digital art, the Rhizome ArtBase, was initiated in 1999. Accepting open submissions, which were lightly moderated, the ArtBase grew over the years to hold more than 2,200 artworks.
This event marks the relaunch of the Rhizome ArtBase, culminating years of research and development. The ArtBase has been implemented in a new software infrastructure centered around Wikibase, using Linked Open Data (LOD), a set of standards for structured, machine-readable, and interoperable data on the web. In this event, Rhizome‘s digital Preservation Director Dragan Espenschied, Software Curator Lyndsey Moulds, and Design Researcher Lozana Rossenova will unveil this newly reimagined archive and explore the benefits of LOD for long-term preservation and sustainability in a complex and diverse born-digital archive. Curator and scholar Annet Dekker, author of Collecting and Conserving Net Art published by Routledge in 2018, will be a respondent to the presentation.
