Join us for a conversation with artist Kapwani Kiwanga and Massimiliano Gioni, Edlis Neeson Artistic Director of the New Museum, presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Kapwani Kiwanga: Off-grid.”
Tickets
The program will be presented onsite at the New Museum. All attendees are required to wear masks, regardless of vaccination status. Guest speakers may be un-masked and will be socially distanced from the audience while speaking onstage. Review the New Museum’s COVID guidelines in advance of your visit.

About the Speakers
Kapwani Kiwanga (b. 1978, Hamilton, Canada) is a Franco-Canadian artist who lives and works in Paris. Kiwanga studied anthropology and comparative religion at McGill University in Montreal and art at L’école des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Kiwanga has had solo exhibitions at the Moody Center for the Arts, Rice University, Houston, TX (2021); Haus der Kunst, Munich, Germany (2020); Kunstinstituut Melly, Rotterdam, Netherlands (2020); Albertinum, Dresden, Germany (2020); MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA (2019); Esker Foundation, Calgary, Canada (2018); Artpace, San Antonio, TX (2018); Tramway, Glasgow, UK (2018); The Power Plant, Toronto, Canada (2017); Logan Center for the Arts, Chicago, IL (2017); South London Gallery, UK (2015); and Jeu de Paume, Paris, France (2014), among others. She was also included in the 59th Venice Biennale (2022). Kiwanga’s work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions at institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Japan (2020); Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany (2020); Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden, Marrakech, Morocco (2020); Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK (2019); Serpentine Galleries, London, UK (2019); MACBA, Barcelona, Spain (2019); Yuz Museum, Shanghai, China (2018); National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (2018); Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, TX (2018); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2018); and Centre Pompidou, Paris, France (2017). She is the winner of the 2022 Zurich Art Prize, 2020 Marcel Duchamp Prize, 2018 Sobey Art Award, and 2018 Frieze Award.
Massimiliano Gioni is the Edlis Neeson Artistic Director of the New Museum, where he leads the curatorial team and is responsible for the museum’s exhibition program. At the New Museum he has curated exhibitions by John Akomfrah, Pawel Althamer, Ed Atkins, Lynda Benglis, Tacita Dean, Nicole Eisenman, Urs Fischer, Hans Haacke, Camille Henrot, Carsten Höller, Kahlil Joseph, Ragnar Kjartansson, Sarah Lucas, Gustav Metzger, Marta Minujin, Chris Ofili, Raymond Pettibon, Carol Rama, Faith Ringgold, Pipilotti Rist, Anri Sala, Peter Saul, Nari Ward, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, among others. He has organized major group shows including “After Nature” (2008); “Ostalgia” (2011); “Here and Elsewhere” (2014); “The Keeper” (2016); and “Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America” (2021), an exhibition originally conceived by Okwui Enwezor and realized in collaboration with Naomi Beckwith, Glenn Ligon, and Mark Nash. Gioni’s international exhibitions include “The Warmth of Other Suns” at the Phillips Collection, Washington DC (2019); “The Restless Earth” Triennale, Milan (2017) and “The Great Mother,” Milan Expo at Palazzo Reale, (2015), both with the Trussardi Foundation; the 55th Venice Biennale (2013); the 10th Gwangju Biennale (2010); the 1st New Museum Triennial (2009); the 4th Berlin Biennale (2006); and Manifesta 5 (2004).
