This month’s New Perspectives tour will examine how Pipilotti Rist’s work explores and rejects assumptions of a separation between the body and its environment. In particular, we will discuss how Rist’s work, from her early single-channel videos to her later expansive architectural projections, relies on communal viewing and vulnerability, creating a new relationship between our own biological systems and the technological systems with which we interact on a daily basis. By closely examining key works such as Pixelwald (Pixel Forest) (2016) and Pickelporno (1992), we will trace Rist’s evolving ideas about the borders and membranes in our lives, and consider how her work urges us to think differently about our relationship to technology, digital systems, and our own bodies.

New Perspectives tours are led by the New Museum Teaching Fellow, an emerging scholar in art history or a related field. The topics of the tours are based on the Fellow’s ongoing research and change monthly, engaging participants in uniquely focused examinations of selected objects and installations. To read descriptions of current and upcoming New Perspectives tours, please view the calendar.

New Perspectives tours are free with Museum admission. Due to limited capacity, please preregister here and meet in the Lobby at the time of the tour.

The current New Museum Teaching Fellow is Maggie Mustard, a PhD candidate in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University, where she is completing her dissertation on postwar Japanese photography.

Additional New Perspectives tours for the season include:
Friday December 2, 12:30 PM
Friday December 16, 12:30 PM
Friday December 23, 12:30 PM
