Professional Development Workshop for Educators with Artist Jordan Casteel

For this professional development workshop, educators will explore personal and social relationships to place and people through portraiture and, more specifically, the work of Jordan Casteel in her exhibition “Within Reach.” Casteel will present a talk considering her experiences as a teacher and learner as they pertain to her approach to portraiture. Casteel’s talk will highlight her recent portraits of her students at Rutgers University, which were inspired in part by the relational concepts of teaching and learning in the book Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom (1994) by feminist scholar and social activist bell hooks. Following the talk educators will participate in a moderated discussion with Casteel.
New Museum and Art21 educators will provide resources including a lesson plan and suggested activities adapted for remote learning for educators to consider how they and their students might reflect on their relationships and representations of people in the worlds they inhabit and those they wish to create. Prior to the session, teachers will be asked to view a nine-minute video, “Jordan Casteel Paints her Community” from Art21’s series New York Close Up, which provides an intimate look at artists living and working in New York during the first decade of their professional careers.
Reservations are honored on a first-come, first-served basis. Workshop space is limited.
