Kenneth Tam’s videos and sculptures locate vulnerabilities within normative conceptions of masculinity. The screening will present several videos in which Tam reimagines the spaces and rituals that give rise to ideas about the male body and its performance. A screening of three works—Breakfast in Bed (2016, 32 min); All of M (2019, 12 min); and The compression is not subservient to the explosion; it gives it increased force (2011, 12 min)—will be followed by a brief artist talk and Q&A.

This screening is part of the series Upstream, which features programs that offer novel ideas and unusual provocations.

Kenneth Tam (b. 1982, Queens, NY) is a Brooklyn-based artist. Tam received his BFA from the Cooper Union and his MFA from the University of Southern California. He has had solo exhibitions at the Visual Arts Center at the University of Texas Austin (2019); Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles (2019); Minneapolis Institute of Art (2017); MIT List Visual Arts Center, Boston (2017); and Night Gallery, Los Angeles (2013). In the fall of 2020, he will present newly commissioned works in solo exhibitions at the Queens Museum and the Kitchen in New York.
