Join us for a conversation with artist Tiona Nekkia McClodden in dialogue with New Museum curator Margot Norton, Allen and Lola Goldring Curator at the New Museum.
In conjunction with the exhibition “Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America,” the New Museum is honored to host this conversation series and highlight the practices of artists participating in this exhibition.

Tiona Nekkia McClodden is a visual artist, filmmaker, and curator whose interdisciplinary practice builds from intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and spiritual practice. Working in diverse media including documentary film, experimental video, sculpture, and sound installation, McClodden’s work critiques and expands understandings of time, memory, and intersubjectivities within Black communities.
McClodden has exhibited and screened work at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2019); Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin (2019); Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (2017); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2017); Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2017), and MoMA PS1, New York (2016). Her films were included at the Kansai Queer Film Festival in Osaka and Kyoto, Japan (2014); and the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival (2009), among a range of international film festivals and film programs.
She is the recipient of a Bucksbaum Award for her work in the 2019 Whitney Biennial, a Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts (2019), an Arts Matter Foundation Grant (2019), a Magnum Foundation Fund (2018), a Keith Haring Fellowship in Art and Activism from Bard College (2018-2019), the 2017 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, and a Pew Fellowship (2016), among others.
Her writing has been featured in Triple Canopy, Artforum, Cultured Magazine, ART21 Magazine, and many other publications. Tiona lives and works in North Philadelphia, PA, and is the founder and owner of Conceptual Fade, a Philadelphia-based micro-gallery and library space centering Black thought and artistic production.
