Join us for a family workshop offered by the New Museum in conjunction with NYCxDESIGN, New York’s official citywide celebration of design, and with the exhibition “Cally Spooner: On False Tears and Outsourcing,” on view at the New Museum from April 27 through June 19, 2016. Marking an important shift in her work, “False Tears and Outsourcing” will bring Spooner’s live performance practice into the format of an exhibition. Responding directly to the space of the Lobby Gallery, Spooner’s project plays on the gallery’s architectural similarity to industrial glass structures and office environments. Ongoing performances by different dancers in the space will investigate the materiality of modern architecture and its effect on the human body.

Reflecting on Spooner’s consideration of architectural spaces, families will use fabric, stockings, and a variety of cushioning materials to create soft sculptures that will double as lounge furniture. Families will collaboratively utilize their sculptures to soften the space around them, transforming the surrounding environment.

New Museum First Saturdays for Families are free of charge. This program is designed and recommended for families with children aged between four and twelve years, and includes free New Museum admission for up to two adults per family. Children under eighteen are always admitted free. No preregistration is required. Space is limited, and tickets are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Your entire party must be present; tickets will not be given to partial parties.
