Presented in conjunction with “Hear, Here” and the spring R&D Season: VOICE.

“Hear, Here” Gallery Sessions is a series of public events that take place within the exhibition “Hear, Here” by Jeanine Oleson, presented in the Fifth Floor Gallery. The set and objects for an opera created by Oleson (to premiere in the New Museum Theater June 13¬–14) will be present during the run of the exhibition, forming an impromptu stage set and catalyst for this series. Each session is led by an invited guest or guests who react to the concepts and objects presented in the exhibition.

Courtesy the Artists will work with the audience to make a provisional choir, interpreting songs of self-empowerment and transforming individual narcissism into group feeling.

Courtesy the Artists is a collaboration between Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade, based in New York. Courtesy the Artists invites artists and others to interpret, react to, and enjoy historical texts that inform present creative conditions. Segade and Gaines are members of the group My Barbarian, which has performed and exhibited extensively. Their work is currently on view in the 2014 Whitney Biennial, where they performed an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s agitprop play The Mother. Courtesy the Artists performances include Songs of the Civil War, Studio Museum in Harlem (June 2014), Choir Practice, Recess (December 2013), 24-Hour Ballad, Recess (November 2013), Night Music, Recess (October 2013), and The Meeting, MoMA P.S.1 (October 2012).
