Artist Seba Calfuqueo will discuss her artistic practice and latest video production with exhibition curator Laura Hakel, Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA) Curatorial Fellow. Hear Calfuqueo reflect on the intersection between Mapuche and Western ways of thinking, Indigenous queer sexuality, and restitution.

About the speakers
Seba Calfuqueo (b. 1991, Santiago de Chile, Ngulumapu/Chile) lives and works in Santiago de Chile. Her recent solo exhibitions include “PACIFICACIÓN” at Palacio Pereira, Santiago de Chile (2023), “Fluir como cascadas” at Nave, Santiago (2022), and “Espejo de Agua / Esporas” at Galería Patricia Ready, Santiago de Chile (2021). Calfuqueo’s works have been featured in exhibitions and screenings including the 22nd Bienal SESC Videobrasil, São Paulo, Brazil (2023); Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France (2022), and the 34th Bienal de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil (2021). She has been a resident at FAARA Fundación Ama Amoedo Residencia Artística (2023) and has received awards from Eyebeam (2023), Fundación FAVA (2018), and Municipalidad de Santiago (2017). In addition to her own practice, Calfuqueo is part of the Mapuche collective Rangiñtulewfü, which publishes YeneRevista, an online magazine of art, thought, and writing in Wallmapu and AbyaYala languages.
Laura Hakel is a curator, writer, and researcher based in New York. She is the ISLAA Curatorial Fellow at the New Museum. Previously, she was Curator at Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, where she curated exhibitions and special projects including “Gabriel Chaile: Patricia” (2017), “Mercedes Azpilicueta: Body Birds” (2018), “Flavia Da Rin: Who’s That Girl?” (2019), and “Andrés Aizicovich: Contacto” (2019). Her writings were recently featured in the publications Prime: Art’s Next Generation (2022), and Latin American Artist (2023), edited by Phaidon Press. Since 2022, Hakel has been the Curator of the Collection and Artistic Projects at Fundación Ama Amoedo, Uruguay. She holds a BA in Art History from the University of Buenos Aires and an MA in Curatorial Studies from the Center of Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York.
