First Saturdays for Families: Chalk Day, 2017

On Saturday, May 5, celebrate Lower East Side History Month with the New Museum by commemorating the Bowery Artist Tribute, the Museum’s digital archive of artists who have lived and worked on or near the Bowery. Families are encouraged to create chalk drawings, stories, and historical accounts along the sidewalks of the Lower East Side.

Please meet us in the New Museum Lobby at 10 a.m. for lemonade and treats before we head out on the Bowery to chalk about the amazing presence of artists in the neighborhood. Participants can post their own chalked illustrations of Bowery artists’ works on Instagram and tag their pictures with #LESstories and #BoweryArtistTribute, and @NewMuseum, for a chance to win a one-year Membership to the New Museum.

Conceived of and launched by LES-based cultural and community groups Downtown Art and FABnyc, Lower East Side History Month aims to connect our present to our past, exploring how the rich history of our local communities can inform and inspire our future. Since 2014, this annual event has worked with more than eighty community groups, cultural organizations, and businesses to bring you a celebration of the rich and diverse history of the Lower East Side.
