In celebration of “Theaster Gates: Young Lord and Their Traces,” musician Shedrick Mitchell will activate the organ featured in A Heavenly Chord (2022) on select Saturdays and Sundays, 1–4 p.m. For the exhibition’s closing week, Mitchell will perform Tuesday, January 31 through Thursday, February 2, 11 a.m.–4 p.m; and Sunday, February 5, 3–6 p.m. Performances will take place on the Fourth Floor and are free with Museum admission.

Shedrick Mitchell is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, where he received formal piano training playing gospel, classical, and jazz music. He has worked on several projects as lead composer, arranger, and producer with such artists as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder. Mitchell finds his greatest reward in teaching and mentoring up-and-coming musicians. He has received four Grammy Awards and recorded over 200 records encompassing styles as diverse as classical, new age, rock, jazz, country, gospel, R&B/soul, and reggae.
