NEW INC and EY Metaverse Lab proudly present two multimedia installations at Onassis ONX, developed during their collaborative artists-in-residence program. The initiative brings together artists and technologists to explore challenges and issues affecting humanity today.

This year’s program features artists Laura Splan and Eva Davidova. Splan is developing Metafrictions, a work that examines new epistemologies emerging alongside notions of the metaverse and the cognitive impact immersive digital worlds may have on embodied experiences. Davidova will present Audience as Virus, a performance dependent on audience participation that examines the current limitations of AI’s predictive abilities. Both artists’ works raise awareness about technology’s growing homogeneity—its effects on humanity and our creative attempts to break free.

About the Collaboration

The EY Metaverse Lab’s artist-in-residence program, a collaborative initiative with NEW INC, brings together artists and technologists to delve into explorations surrounding humanity and our interactions with society-altering technologies. The EY Metaverse Lab’s primary emphasis is on harnessing the potential of immersive and emerging technologies for positive human impact, focusing on a wide spectrum of themes including accessibility, identity and inclusion, social mobility, and social impact. With the power of colliding the worlds of art and technology, the collaborations between the EY Metaverse Lab and their artists reflect on the importance of the human condition being deeply embedded in how we think about and imagine new futures that activate emerging technology for human betterment.

About the Artists:

Laura Splan is a Brooklyn-based artist working at the intersections of science, technology, and culture. Her research-based studio practice and interdisciplinary collaborations culminate in multimedia exhibitions that reframe hypothetical artifacts of a posthuman landscape to unravel entanglements of natural and built systems. Her internationally recognized artworks and exhibitions have been presented at Musea Brugge, Bruges; Centre d’Art Santa Mònica, Barcelona; Museum of Arts & Design, Pioneer Works, Brooklyn Museum, and The Nobel Prize Museum at Liljevalchs, Stockholm. Her work is in the collections of the Thoma Art Foundation and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and commissions include projects for the Centers for Disease Control Foundation, Vanderbilt Museum, and Bruges Triennial. Splan’s research has been supported by the Jerome Foundation, Harvestworks, Simons Foundation, and Pollock-Krasner Foundation.

Eva Davidova is an interdisciplinary artist with a focus on new media. Her work addresses ecological disaster, interdependency, and political implications of technology through performative works rooted in the absurd. She questions what we give for granted and explores possibilities for agency through uncertainty and play. Davidova often deliberately “misuses” technology to disturb its prevalent acceptance and emotional manipulation that physical and informational architecture both exert. Davidova has exhibited at the Bronx Museum, the Everson Museum, the Albright Knox Museum, MACBA Barcelona, CAAC Sevilla, Instituto Cervantes, Madrid; and La Regenta, Canarias among others.
