Presented as part of “AUNTSforcamera” and R&D Season: CHOREOGRAPHY.
An important interactive component of the installation of “AUNTSforcamera” at the New Museum includes a series of nine artist-devised tours, which have been organized using AUNTS’ chain-curation model. Nine artists have been invited by “AUNTSforcamera” artists to create a response to the exhibition in the form of a tour, which will be performed exclusively for and with participating audiences. Esther Neff was invited by Anya Liftig.
Esther Neff: “I am interested in how museumgoers define process-based works as final products and how our attentions and perceptions make ‘‘meanings’ and formulate interpretations that we then take with us when we leave the exhibition. How ’visible’ are the processes that created these video installations? How do the bodies of witnesses enter these processes and define works of/as art?”
In keeping with the spirit of AUNTS, the currency of exchange for attending these tours is not monetary; instead visitors must provide proof of submission to #auntsforcamera, an interactive work by Karl Scholz included in the “AUNTSforcamera” exhibition. #auntsforcamera utilizes the downloadable app OchoVideo to record eight-second user-generated video clips to become part of a sequenced single-channel video installation (on view in the New Museum lobby) that accumulates over the course of the entire project from September 8, 2014, to February 15, 2015.
#auntsforcamera utilizes the downloadable app OchoVideo (available for free through iTunes) to accumulate eight-second viewer-generated dance videos into a single-channel loop. To participate in an artist-led tour as part of “AUNTSforcamera,” please follow these steps:
1. Download the OchoVideo app from iTunes onto your smartphone.
2. Use OchoVideo to record and upload your own eight-second dance-for-camera content with the hashtag “#auntsforcamera.” Don’t forget the hashtag!
3. Use OchoVideo’s email functionality to share a link to your video(s) when you RSVP to email@example.com; subject: “AUNTS tour submission.” Please include three tours that you are interested in attending, organized by preference. We will try to accommodate all first choice requests as space allows.
If you do not have an iPhone, you can submit a link to an original video, or something new that we can take an eight-second clip from, to add to the #auntsforcamera feed. It must be original content.
Space is extremely limited for each tour. Submissions will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
