Rhizome x MoMI Present: ArtBase Anthologies with Auriea Harvey

On Wednesday, April 3, artist Auriea Harvey will join Rhizome Co-Executive Director Michael Connor, Museum of the Moving Image Associate Curator of Media Art Regina Harsanyi, and Rhizome Director of Digital Preservation Dragan Espenschied in a conversation about how Rhizome preserves early works of net art, the challenges of presenting born-digital art within a museum context, and the curatorial decisions at play in Harvey’s body of work. Hosted by Rhizome in partnership with Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI), this event marks the launch of ArtBase Anthologies, Rhizome’s new initiative offering perspectives on digital art history through selected works. Following the talk, Harvey will lead a special tour of her MoMI exhibition, “Auriea Harvey: My Veins Are The Wires, My Body Is Your Keyboard.”
After early encounters with digital culture thanks to text adventure games and the Parsons computer lab, Auriea Harvey began creating her own online work in the 1990s. She designed the first websites for musicians including Janet Jackson, Depeche Mode, and Lenny Kravitz; and created digital artworks that explored narrative, character, and the sculptural qualities of networks. In 1999, she teamed up with Michaël Samyn to form the artist duo Entropy8Zuper!, the first iteration of a collaboration that continues to this day. For both Rhizome’s online exhibition “Net Art Anthology” and Auriea Harvey’s solo survey at MoMI, Rhizome undertook a major restoration of early online artworks by Harvey and Entropy8Zuper!.

About the Artist
Auriea Harvey (b. 1971, Indianapolis, IN) is an artist living and working in Rome. Her practice encompasses virtual and tangible sculptures, drawings and simulations that blend digital and handmade production including 3D printing, augmented and virtual reality. Drawing from her extensive experience in net art and video games in the collaborative groups Entropy8Zuper!, Tale of Tales, and Song of Songs, she brings personal narratives and character development to her practice. She is primarily concerned with making the mythological world visible through form, interaction, and immersion. Her works are a synthesis of art historical reference and imagination, and she is engaged across time, media, and material to define what sculptural production means in the present moment. Before moving to Europe, Harvey went to Parsons School of Design for sculpture, living and working in New York for a decade. The artist’s work can be found in the permanent collections of Whitney Museum of American Art, Buffalo AKG Museum, Walker Art Center, and Rhizome’s Net Art Anthology. Her video games and mixed reality works have had international success, including exhibitions at the Tinguely Museum, Basel; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; New Museum, New York; and ZKM, Karlsruhe. Harvey is the recipient of a Creative Capital grant and a winner of the Independent Games Festival Nuovo Award. She is represented by bitforms gallery, NYC.
About the collaborators
Onassis ONX is a hybrid production and exhibition space with a global community of members who create interactive and immersive extended reality (XR) works. Located in the Onassis Gallery in Midtown Manhattan, it was founded in partnership by the Onassis Foundation and New Museum’s NEW INC.
