Mannahatta: Studies for an Opera about Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs 9 min
Directed by Joshua Frankel, composed by Judd Greenstein, libretto by Tracy K. Smith, and choreography by Will Rawls

This film represents our first animation studies for an opera about Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs, which will feature animation throughout, a libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Tracy K. Smith, and choreography by Will Rawls. This film is set to the poem “Mannahatta” by Walt Whitman; its visual motifs explore the collision of nature with the modern city—a theme we selected for this study because it is both present in Whitman’s poem as well as central to the work of Moses and his conflict with Jacobs. mosesjacobsopera.com
