Karen Finley investigates artists’ strategies for thinking outside the dollar, working within the institution, and funding one’s practice as an outsider. Participants are encouraged to bring one new idea, funding hurdle, or art historical example that addresses ways in which artists work around (or without) money in an effort at a self-sustaining practice.
Presented as part of “NEA 4 in Residence + Performing Beyond Funding Limits” (May–June 2013) curated by Travis Chamberlain, Associate Curator of Performance, New Museum. Four individual residencies with the NEA 4 (Karen Finley, John Fleck, Holly Hughes, and Tim Miller) set the stage for tackling contemporary issues surrounding funding for performance art and imagining new strategies for adapting performance practices beyond the limits of available funding.
