The High Line Green Corps will assist participants in making their own upcycled hanging planters using everyday materials, and will also showcase examples of adaptive reuse through horticulture.
In New York City, discarded items are easy to come by and green space is at a premium; adaptive reuse projects like the High Line cleverly turn one into the other! Even the most unexpected items can be transformed into a tiny patch of green. Repurposed planters remind us that you don’t need new materials or a lot of space to start growing your own garden—just a little bit of ingenuity and resolve.
The High Line Green Corps will showcase several unique, visually stunning examples of adaptive reuse through horticulture, many of them created by teenagers. Planters made from old furniture, shoes, blue jeans, and gutters will be on display. StreetFest attendees will be able to make their own upcycyled hanging planters using every day repurposed materials, including Capri-Sun pouches, kickballs, and coffee cans, to name just a few!
