Plant-in City: Twenty-First-Century Terrariums
Plant-in City is a collaborative project between architects, designers, and technologists interested in building new ways of interacting with nature.
Mankind is increasingly leaving nature behind and migrating to concrete jungles where green space is at a premium. Urban dwellers will always long for a connection to the earth, however: we build parks, protect nature reserves, and grow gardens. We’ve become adept at shaping nature to fit our dwelling spaces and lifestyles.
Our goal is to create green space in urban areas from the inside out. Plant-in City is a modular architectural system that can be stacked and integrated to meet site-specific needs and to create unique interactive experiences. Each terrarium is a microecosystem and serves as the building block of a city of interconnected plants.
Through a series of embedded sensors, environmental data collected through the plants is translated into sound. Visitors will be able to view this environmental data and perform irrigation through a smartphone.
