Part of the Street Program
The Mayan Ball Game is an event that mashes the ancient Mesoamerican sport with New York City street basketball. The game is fun, absurd, and competitive; the tournament will pit eight cultural institutions against each other to crown the 2015 Mayan Ball Game champ. (No sacrifices will be performed.)
Each team will field five to ten players, and games will be held from approximately 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Each game will last approximately half an hour and will be as physically strenuous as a half-court basketball game. The games will be refereed and announced to Festival-goers by veteran Aesthletics announcers. There will also be half-time shows and other concurrent performances. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the winners, participants, and tournament standouts.
