Typecast will be a series of structured conversations about high-rise, superblock apartment buildings, or “towers-in-the-park.”
While the deficits of this much-maligned housing typology are well known (from the concentration of poverty to the absence of street-life integration) their particular assets and untapped capital—including opportunities for elderly living, open space programming, in-fill housing, or co-operative ownership models—are not well understood.
The Architectural League will host a series of focus groups—one in each of the five boroughs—with residents, advocates, and designers that will recast the terms of this debate. We will launch this project at StreetFest, engaging an audience of StreetFest participants and Lower East Side–housing advocates.
