Part of the street program

On the Bowery and the Lower East Side, the neglected commons has been an opportunity for neighbors to come together for generations. Vacant public lots continue to be opportunities for neighbors to create gardens and collaborative spaces. 596 Acres will offer a series of self-guided audio tours focused on exposing the mechanisms residents can and have used to affect development in their neighborhoods. Sites will include Cooper Square Cooperative, Elizabeth Street, Siempre Verde, and El Jardin del Paraiso Gardens. Physical maps, audio guides, and other visual artifacts, developed in collaboration with Deborah Berke Partners and GRT Architects, will augment the histories of each site and help visitors navigate among them.

Participating Organizations: 596 Acres, Deborah Berke Partners
