Wherefore Store is a storefront scenario, a format for imagining future economies by suggesting what global-scale economic change could mean for everyday, street-level commerce. Photo credit: Matthew Sussman
During IDEAS CITY, Wherefore Store will present a concept store for future clothing practices. Visitors will be encouraged to imagine how their lives might change if and when the material intensity of the global economy declines. We believe that this is not a necessarily bleak circumstance but rather an opportunity for compelling, alternative visions of economic progress.
In addition to visiting our storefront, join our workshop and contribute your perspectives and ideas. Our philosophy is that economics doesn’t belong to economists, and that it is not merely a game of number crunching and predictive modeling. In this era of crisis and transformation, economics needs to be about generating new ways of living and doing business at a human scale. We want more people to think about economic futures, not through abstract theory but through lived experiences of actionable, long-term possibilities. For this, we offer the Wherefore Store, a storefront scenario format for imagining future economies and what these could mean for everyday, street-level commerce. It is an experiment in collaborative storytelling about our collective and individual futures.
Wherefore Store will be open May 1 and 2 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Friday May 3 from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Textile Arts Center on 26 West 8th Street. Wherefore Store will also have a booth at StreetFest on Saturday May 4.
