The Greenhorns is a nontraditional, grassroots, nonprofit organization made up of young farmers and a diverse set of collaborators. Our mission is to recruit, promote, and support the new generation of young farmers. We do this by producing avant-garde programming, video, audio, web content, publications, events, and art projects that increase the odds for success and enhance the profile and social lives of America’s young farmers.
Exploring the theme of Untapped Capital at this year’s IDEAS CITY, we will be hosting an interactive exhibit of creation using a bicycle/human-powered sewing machine. As young farmers, we often learn through apprenticeship and experimentation. We barter our capital, time, and energy as sweat equity for knowledge and experience, and we will make this a possibility for IDEAS CITY visitors. With our bicycle-powered sewing machine we will be giving basic sewing lessons while creating an installation of a quilted Agrarian Celebration Tent using reclaimed and donated fabrics. This tent will be used in the future to host our Young Farmers’ Mixers. We will also be learning about natural yarn dying and weaving from experienced sheep and goat farmers, on our large-scale frame loom.
