Clemente Soto Vélez, Rivington & Suffolk, 1931. Photographer unknown
A building-wide tour features demonstrations of the diverse forms of art happening within the walls of the Clemente Soto Vélez Center. The Clemente and the Projects Project bridge the barely tapped multicultural human capital of Lower East Side housing projects, and the sometimes-hermetic, under-tapped, Puerto Rican/Latino/multicultural art resources of the Clemente Center’s forty-three visual art studios, eleven nonprofit arts organizations, four theaters, three galleries, and café.
The tour showcases the photography, capoeira, modern dance, bilingual children’s theater, sculpture, installation, and jazz taking place under the center’s auspices. Neighbors getting to know neighbors is the objective!
